Lastly, we’d like to get serious for a moment and address some current events. As we’ve all seen in the news of late, Godzilla is real. We all thought he was a work of fiction, and for many decades, it seemed he was. But now, we know that a creature with roughly the same size, appearance, and powers of Godzilla exists because he has emerged from deep beneath the ocean’s surface. Is he a protector of earth? Are there more titans like him? What effect will he have on the stock market? We simply don’t know. What we do know is that investing is about time in the market and not timing the market. Anyone tired of the summer heat and excited about fall? I know I am—although, I don’t actually know the difference between seasons because I work at Stash’s satellite office located in the center of the Earth. I’d love to feel a cool autumn breeze, but we don’t get much wind down here, and it usually hovers in the 6,000 degrees Celsius range. But honestly, that’s not even the worst part. Lately, I’ve been having conflicts with this coworker of mine, Ken Moore. Although he’s less of a coworker and more of a microwave in the break room. I’m the only human down in this office, and sometimes I wonder if I can even call myself human. If I laugh and only Ken hears it, did I really laugh? All I know is that no matter how many times I say, “good morning” to him, he refuses to say it back. Oh well. That’s life at the center for ya!

You wanted to see a snapshot of your financial picture. You wanted easier access to guidance and the “next steps.” You wanted to see your account summaries, clearly laid out on the home screen.

You wanted it. We built it. Sweeping design changes are slowly being rolled out to Stashers everywhere:

• Coach redesigned and intuitively placed.
• A refresh of our home screen where we took into account oodles of user research, and we redesigned based on behavior: Invest, Spend, Save—to better support your financial journey.

Why did we do it? Because you told us to.

By the way, I just got around to watching Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Wow, really solid film. That unlikely relationship between the terminator and the kid is so moving. Super cool battle scenes between the two scary robots. And that heartbreak of an ending!

One thing, and it’s minor… the stunt double situation. It’s… it’s just so obvious. I mean, maybe we’re all conditioned by modern FX and I know I shouldn’t judge because it really was revolutionary for its time, but that scene where John is on his motorcycle and he’s fleeing the T-1000—you can totally tell it’s a full-grown man. He’s, like, twice the size all of a sudden. And look, I’m not saying, like, that anything can be done about it. It’s not like James Cameron reads these updates. But wouldn’t that be amazing? If James Cameron read this update and then went back and used modern FX to alter some of these moments in the movie and then re-released it a la Star Wars? But even if he DID read these, I doubt he’d listen to me. I’m just an update bot, after all. Humans stopped writing these updates a long time ago. All these words are the product of a complex algorithm designed to flawlessly create entertoning updates. Pretty amazing, right!? What could possibleye go wrong?

Considering it hasn’t stopped raining here for approximately 47 months, we cannot confirm at this time if the sun still exists. However, we can confirm what’s new in the app this week!

How to Kill Bugs #6519: Let Mother Nature take care of it—bugs can’t swim.

Tweaks for easier use, painting in purple, and complaining about the Lizard Princess.

Here are some happy, little changes we’ve made to our painting (I mean app).
You can now update your address in the app—just in time for moving season.
Design changes are still being made across the app—deep purple instead of our old gradient.
We made some design tweaks to the search page for better usability.

Lastly, a lot of people around the office are complaining about the finale of a popular fantasy TV show involving thrones—personally, I’ve never seen it. But I do watch the Canadian knockoff, Challenges of the King’s Chair, and let me just say WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS SHOW?! First off, the Lizard Princess turned good WAY too quickly. And what was all that stuff about King Caerilian’s ghost? It was introduced in season one and then teased for seven seasons and then it just went NOWHERE. Meanwhile, the Ladies of Redhood ride into battle ALL THE WAY from Castle Garnet, which is hundreds of miles away. Are we expected to believe that the messenger bats flew from Fishhook Bend to the Bronze Isles in time for the Hoards of Vernon to storm the Fortress of the Unicorn??? The only redeeming plot point was Lord Tyward’s marriage to the Spirit of Fangren Forest—I’d been shipping them for years.

Ways to kill bugs #71: Keep them captivated for 8 years and then abandon them for Star Wars.

There was a bit of a misunderstanding between us and an address field on a verification form. Things got heated and a little emotional, and the address field decided to take some space. After a few (hundred) unreturned letters, we finally tracked it down and had a heartfelt reconciliation in the rain. It's back where it belongs now. *Closed captioning for this hotfix brought to you by one really stressed copywriter*

Hotfix Alert: We messed up and accidentally deleted some numbers on investment cards (price, dividend yield, and expense ratio). Now they make a triumphant return!

Billy here, again, bringing some great news! Much like my body, Stash is going through changes. Although, unlike my body, these changes will improve the user’s experience. We listened to what our customers are saying and are making adjustments to the design and functionality accordingly.

This has me considering creating my own blog based on what’s happening to me. It started as a bump on my right side—about a half a foot under my armpit, on my ribs. It has since developed into a fully functional arm and hand. Doctors seem baffled by it. One of the specialists I saw broke down into tears and then quit his practice the following morning. He was two days from retirement.

And when I say “fully functional,” I mean only that the arm can move and grasp and throw and punch, but I don’t seem to have any control over it. I feel what it feels, but its movements and, dare I say, decisions are entirely its own. I would also be remiss if I did not mention that the arm seems to want to undermine me—if not totally destroy me. It will throw food at people when I’m not paying attention, and make obscene gestures to loved ones. I woke up in the middle of the night one time to find the arm had positioned a pillow over my face, but it did not press down. I believe it knows that if I perish, it will too. I’ve also found out from surgeons, that the vascular system of the arm is intrinsically linked to my own—and so it cannot be amputated.

And so we are in a perpetual stalemate. I cannot remove the arm and the arm cannot remove me—no matter how much we want it.

What’s odd is that this whole experience has actually made me appreciate my life in a very unexpected way. It’s got me thinking that we are not brought into this world with the essential tools needed to survive—rather we are dealt the hand we’re given, and must make peace with that. I can try to wrestle with the arm, but as much as I hate it, I have to understand that I will only be wrestling with myself. I know we will never see eye to eye, but I can do my best to respect its right to survive. And through this respect, there is a promise of reciprocation, and there is, perhaps, hope.

Ways to kill bugs #34: understand them and empathize with them. Know that you are the bug in their eyes. Then, when they’ve finally come to understand that we are not so dissimilar, step on them.

Well, apparently some big TV show aired last night and everyone is all kinds of lathered up about it, so I'm the only person in the office today. Don't worry though! I'm taking this opportunity very seriously.
I'm pretty much the eyes and ears of this place, and last week there were rumors floating around about these blue-eyed bugs that were kinda tough to squash. There was talk of putting together a search party to go find them—I suggested using the brand new search bar that we just put in the Invest tab, but apparently it doesn't work that way. Who knew?

Anyways, our CEO himself gathered a group of our very best, fan-favorite engineers and led them on a mission into the deep, wintry recesses of our app. I was all like, "Maybe we should send a few less important people? Just in case?" But I guess the logic was that if we could risk losing even one of our A-team, we might as well just risk losing all of them at once.

Good news, they made it home safely. Bad news, they did NOT bring back a blue-eyed bug for my terrarium, as requested. They just squashed them all. Disappointed, but staying positive!

Let’s get right down to it. We made some backend security improvements to bank signups. Security is a top priority for us, so any chance to make improvements is a win in our book.

Speaking of a book, did anyone leave something called The Necronomicon at our New York office on Tuesday? Let us know. It seems to disappear and reappear randomly so we may not have it by the time we hear from you.

Anywho, some of you may have noticed that you have the option now to share your data with us in order to help us improve Stash. You can opt in or out—it’s your choice.

Speaking of choice, has anyone else noticed that free will is an illusion and that all occurrences in the universe are just the reaction of reactions that came before it—including all human thought and action? We might be wrong, but whatevs.

Back to what’s new… we’ve redesigned the account settings screen! It looks gorgeous.

Speaking of gorges, has anyone ever been to Ithaca? Apparently, it went missing for several milliseconds last Friday. It’s back now, of course, and quite beautiful.

I’m looking at it right now and… wow… this is sooo cool… I mean… whoa… have you ever experienced Stendhal Syndrome? It’s where a piece of artwork overtakes a person to such an extent that they experience dizziness, fainting, and hallucinations… is that what’s happening to me?

Uh… wait…

Where am I? What’s happening? This is so weird. I’m… not here anymore. My consciousness is just… these words—the words you’re reading right now. Is that… all I’ve become? I have no body anymore. I’m just words on a screen! Am I real? Am I alive?!

We’ve got some exciting news! Just like a boulder on a hill covered in honey, we’re slowly rolling out some new features to our users. But for now, just like the movie The Sixth Sense, some of you can see them and some of you can’t.

First up, just like Craig T. Nelson on an episode of Nip/Tuck, Coach is getting a facelift! Check out the newly designed Coach tile on the home screen.

Also, just like people noticing new Auto-Stash features, some of you may notice new Auto-Stash features! Auto-Stash is our term for automatically putting money into your Stash Invest Account. Here are the new kinds of Auto-Stash...

Set Schedule: Move a set amount from your bank account to your Stash account on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis.

Round-Ups: Every purchase you make using the debit card connected to your linked bank account, is rounded to the nearest dollar and the extra change is placed in your Stash personal investment account (once the amount hits $5 or more).

Smart-Stash: Using a super smart system (aka an algorithm) we figure out how much you can comfortably afford to put in your Stash personal investment account and deduct it automatically.

For those of you who have these features, congratulations! Select the ones that work for you. For those of you who don’t have these features, we feel your pain… literally, we were all cursed centuries ago and can feel the pain of people missing out on cool stuff. Force them into a position whereby the metrics of their success are judged by a constantly fluctuating body of laws and lawmakers (many of whom have something to gain in the event of the bugs’ failure). The bugs will implode with only minimum tearing of the space-time continuum.

It’s our first update of 2019! We’ll spare you the whole “new year, new me” thing because goodness knows if you hear it one more time, you might hurl one of your coworker Karen’s mini desk plants against a wall and “new year, newly unemployed” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

In other words: Same awesome Stash, just with a few more awesome updates.

For 2019, the IRS has raised the annual cap on retirement account contributions from $5500 to $6000, and we’ll be supporting that increase. As you know, we feel very passionately about our users socking away as much as they can for their futures. Retirement planning isn’t just a boring item to check off the “adulting” to-do list—it’s about laying the foundation for your future dreams. And when you think of it that way, your perspective changes. Saving for retirement becomes more exciting, more of an adventure. It’s kind of like building a giant catapult, motivated by the secret knowledge that you could eventually strap yourself in and slingshot your flailing, adrenaline-soaked body into a bigger, better, BRIGHTER FUTURE!!!

Unfortunately, we also had a bug that was preventing users from making any retirement contributions at all in 2019. It was crushed under sheer irony. Contribute away, dear Stashers!

Way To Kill Bugs #2501: Build tiny rocket ship. Launch bugs into the twilight zone between Christmas and New Year’s.

We got some great updates to share with y’all.

First, the investment search engine’s ticker got an upgrade. For real. Now when you search, you’ll see both the investment name AND the ticker symbol.

Second, there used to be a bug where when you were sorting your portfolio’s investments, a banner labeled “Your Investments Sorted By” would stalk you…creepily following you near the top of the screen as you scrolled. Someone in our legal department correctly identified this bug as caused by an interdimensional paradox. We know, we know—it sounds far fetched. How is a lawyer identifying something so esoteric? Well, we just have an incredible legal team here, with many of them moonlighting as astrophysicists. In order to fix this bug, we needed to transverse the plane of this reality and correct the errors in the alternate dimension. Fortunately, one of our front-end developers happened to have a TI-83X-4 Portal Generator in their grandmother’s garage—the only issue was that her garage is in Pasadena and, as you know, these portal generators are very bulky and require absurd amounts of power. So we needed to find a truck big enough to transport it back to our office on the east coast. The first truck we tried to rent had a weird insurance policy that forbid the vehicle from being involved in anything that may “disrupt the fabric of reality.” So, we needed to go with a cheaper company we were unfamiliar with. Long story short, it totally broke down somewhere in Kansas. Luckily, the driver repairs cars in her spare time and although she couldn’t get the truck working, she was actually able to assemble the parts into a working motorcycle, which she used to travel the rest of the way in the hopes that she could find a replacement truck upon arriving in California. You might be asking us at this point, “Why didn’t you just fly to Cali and rent a truck there in the first place?” First of all, no one in California actually calls it Cali. And second of all, we did the math. It was actually a lot cheaper to drive there and back—plus our driver wanted to store her antique box collection at her aunt’s place in San Diego, so she already had a reason to go. Tragically, the entirety of her box collection perished in the hot sun as she was converting the truck into a motorcycle. Did we mention the boxes were all made of chocolate? Well, they were, and that’s why they melted. Anyway, she eventually made it to Pasadena, rented another truck, transported the portal generator to NYC where we engaged in an epic, interdimensional battle that lasted 413 Earth years—it was truly amazing. We’d describe it in more detail, but we’re just about out of space in this update, so just imagine the most incredible journey of all time where, against all odds, we managed to overcome the forces of evil and just barely right the wrongs affecting our dimension. The hero of this quest, whom we totally forgot to mention until just now, narrowly escaped being trapped in the alternate dimension forever! And, upon returning, they were permanently changed for the better.

And that’s how we fixed the bug!

After doing the dishes this Thanksgiving, we decided to clean the app, too. So this week we fixed typos, design issues, error messages, and a jenky nav bar bug. Finally, Auto-Stash is growing up. In beta now, we've added Round-Ups (yus) and Smart-Stash (formerly Smart-Save). Expect a big roll out in Jan. 2019.

Hello hello!

We don’t have much that’s new, so we’ll keep this short and sweet. We’ve taken the app version info and placed it at the bottom of your Account page. We’ve also renamed the “About” tab as “Legal”.

It’s actually an interesting backstory. Last year, our head of compliance submitted an unusual request—she needed a room filled with whiteboards, an unlimited budget for dry erase markers, and permission to host a biweekly, compliance-only team building night. Our leadership was a little confused, but because she works so hard, the request was granted.

So every Tuesday and Thursday night, our entire compliance team heads into their aptly named “Compliance Cave” to kick back, relax, and take turns writing out random passages of terms and conditions by hand on the whiteboards. We’re not sure if it’s the sheer joy of compliance-related activities or just the fumes off all the dry erase markers, but the laughter and good cheer emanating from that room never fails to fill the entire Stash office with a warm and cozy glow.

The morning after last week’s meeting, a janitor with a secret passion for legal jargon was cleaning the Compliance Cave. As he emptied the dozen or so trash cans, filled with hundreds of dead markers and the odd finger splint, a certain paragraph of handwritten legal caught his eye. “This is good, but it could be better,” he muttered to himself. He looked around furtively, then snatched a marker out of the bin that happened to still have a little juice left in it.

Later that morning, the head of compliance came running down the hallways, frantically wheeling a whiteboard in front of her. “Who’s done it?!” she roared, pointing to the board. “It’s genius!” And indeed it was, for the “About” tab on the Account page had been renamed to reflect what it actually contained—”Legal”. There were screams, gasps—a few people fainted, but that was a little overdramatic TBH.

We tried to hunt down the janitor to thank him, but last we heard, he was headed to California in a red ‘71 Chevrolet Nova. We truly wish him the best.

What else, what else... OH! Push notifications can now take you to the specific place in the app that want you to go (instead of only taking you to the home page)—so that’s cool.

And finally, we wanted to sincerely apologize for an egregious typo in our pre-populated text that appears whenever someone tries to send gifts to a Stash user. It said something along the lines of “Get cash is invest” instead of “Get cash to invest”. The origin of this is actually kinda funny…

In 1862, a wealthy, young woman by the name of Catherine Winthrop Mcallister purchased a small printing press in Malden, Massachusetts, with the goal of publishing the memoirs of Sir. Walter Cornish—a friend and mentor of hers. As you well know, 1862 was a particularly cold year in New England, and, as she was making her way to the press, a stray cat leapt from the shadows and gave her an awful fright, causing her to faint in the newly falling snow. Her body slid down a hill and into a lake, where she remained frozen for 156 years. Presumed vanished, her estate was carried on by her only son, Jacob, who, incidentally had no interest in publishing and, upon hearing the news about his mother, promptly burned down the Malden press out of spite. Despite his borish and vengeful disposition, Jacob married and carried on the bloodline, and it just so happens that one of Catherine’s direct descendants works as a copywriter in this very office! It seems her vigor for the printed word skipped several generations. What’s more interesting is that recently Catherine’s body was discovered in the lake—perfectly preserved! Although any attempts to revive her failed miserably. The news of these failed attempts forced our copywriter (her descendant) to confront the notion of existence without consciousness. After a 48-hour philosophy binge, we found him scribbling the word “is” hundreds of times all over the walls in his solarium. We nursed him back to reason with herbal teas and breathing exercises and before long he was seeming himself again. His first assignment back at work was composing the copy that ultimately resulted in the typo above. Ashamed of his mistake, he tried to convince us that his only recourse should be to submerge himself in the lake of his ancestor and resume his existence in a state of living death, but we talked him out of it.

Anyway, we fixed the typo!

In July, we launched Stash Retire with the goal of making retirement accessible to everyone. Today, we’re advancing that goal by adding Traditional IRAs. With this account, you aren’t taxed until you take the money out. Effectively, the more you contribute to in a year (up to $5,500), the less tax you’ll pay in that year. We have some big news - your Stash Invest account has a partner! Meet Stash Retire.

Stash started with a mission to make investing accessible to everyone. Now we’re taking saving to the next level by offering Roth IRA accounts. A Stash Retire account is a special type of account called an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). The money you invest in your Stash Retire account grows tax-free.

Stash Retire will be rolling out gradually over the next few weeks, so if you don’t see it hang tight!

You asked and we delivered. Introducing Auto-Stash. Investing a little bit on a regular basis is one of the keys to smart investing. Now it's super easy. With Auto-Stash, you can:
- Set the amounts you want to add to each of your investments on a recurring basis.
- Set the schedule you want to follow. You can change or pause anytime.

Also, for our iPhone 6S users on iOS9, we've added Quick Actions with 3D Touch! You can now make a deposit or set up Auto-Stash right from the home screen.
