Description
Full guidebook. No account necessary. No hidden costs.
Now in their 12th year as a mobile app, and their 14th online, the Wise Pilgrim Guides are the go-to source of up-to-date information on the Camino de Santiago.
The app is updated regularly with new content and new features and offers you the ability to leave tips for pilgrims following behind you.
This guide covers the Camino del Norte from Irún to Santiago de Compostela and includes all of the alternate routes along the way. It has been redesigned and now works almost exclusively offline (to share your comments with others will require a data connection). As more an more albergues share their WiFi this becomes less of an issue, and the guide will tell you which ones offer WiFi.
Accommodation Directory: A full directory of Albergues, camping, hotels, pensions, paradors, and cases rurales. Over 500 in total, with special attention to those that can be booked online.
Stageless Guide: No more "stage anxiety" or guide created bottlenecks.
Maps: Offline and online versions of a beautiful topographical may will give you a good view of the terrain ahead.
Photos: Photos of albergues, monuments and other points of interest along the way. Currently 400+ images and growing.
Scrollable Elevation Map: This one is hard to show with just a screenshot, but the elevation that appears at the top of every city page scrolls East to West. One complete elevation, from Irún to Santiago, uninterrupted by page folds.
Comments: Albergue closed early for the season? Have a restaurant that you want to share, or perhaps one to warn others about? Every location in the app gives you the opportunity to leave a comment and to read the comments left by others. No registration necessary.
¡Buen Camino and thank you for your support!

Minor update to albergue information, and more improvements for dark mode users.
Minor update to albergue information, and more improvements for dark mode users.
Big update for the early Spring as pilgrims are already walking.
It adds 123km of alternate paths suitable for bikes or pilgrims on foot in very muddy conditions.
This update contains many small bug fixes (albergue closing times), better visibility of maps using dark mode, and a critical fix that caused the app to crash when you tried to auto-scroll to your closest location.
It also includes gps track updates.

Big update in anticipation of the upcoming year.
Commenting fixed, thank you everyone for submitting bug reports, it was invaluable to getting this fixed.
Improved navigation, content updates, and bug fixes.
In this update, the last major one of the season, I have improved the way to navigate between adjacent towns along the way.
I have also fixed some map-related bugs, thanks to all of you who have written to help me diagnose them.
MAJOR BUG FIX
Content update.
Minor bug fixes, including a few albergues which did not appear on the map view.
This update does two things at the same time.
It introduces the ability to send updates 'Over the air' meaning that if there is a change in telephone number, or price, or opening hours of your accommodation I can get them to you faster. The is important at the moment since the hiking season is beginning and many albergues are making last minute changes.
New routes will still be delivered via app store updates.
-and-
It eliminates a minor bug that annoyed me greatly.
Everything else remains as awesome as always.
New feature shows whether an albergue is CURRENTLY open, closed, or about to open/close. Handy for pilgrims walking in the shoulder season and winter.
Updated content.
Minor changes to appearance, updated icons to match printed book.
Prettier elevation map.
Bug fixes here and there.
bug fixes
Updates to correct no longer passable sections of the trail.
This release introduces a dark mode for lights out albergue users. And it greatly cleans up the UX to make more content more visible.
There are a few new photos from a recent camino, and minor changes to prices and availability.
Thank you everyone for all of the comments you leave within the app!
Content Update: Updated opened/closed, as well as prices.
Better maps: Now with the option to turn off map markers and a better selector for map types.
Feature Update: Introducing the WhatsApp Message Maker: A simple tool to help you initiate a conversation with the albergue or hotel owner to check for availability and request a reservation. It automatically translates what you need into a short request, and from their you can finish the deal directly with the property owner.

Many changes to the content, updated pricing etc.
Introducing better communication tools: It is now much easier to initiate calls to accommodation via landline, mobile, WhatsApp, and email.
Accommodations linked to maps app, for turn by turn directions if necessary.
Bug fix: A bug crept into the last version, causing the app to crash when you tried to search the albergue directory or leave a comment. That bug is no more!
Updated content for the 2022 pilgrims. These include many uncertain closures and reopening and new prices as well as updated contact information.
Also, minor bug fixes for:
1. notched devices.

2021 SPRING UPDATE
I have undone some of the changes made during last Spring's Covid update. Rather than maintain an evershifting list of openings and closings, I have included all accommodation that have not been confirmed as permanently closed. There are some new albergues, and several more have changed ownership.
Some minor stuff too:
Better visibility of private accommodation prices.
Updated content, 20+ new hotels and lots of albergues under new ownership.
COVID UPDATE:
This update includes updated information regarding the reopening status of accommodations related to Covid-19.
I hope these release notes find all of you safe at home and healthy with your family, no doubt looking forward to brighter days on the camino.
This update hopes to make those days a bit easier to navigate. Here in Santiago we are all home bound so I have made the best of the situation by coding some long desired changes to the apps.
Design Changes, Functionality Additions, and a bit of bed bug fumigation:
• A completely redesigned 'region' view. This was to accommodate a new feature which allows you to set a place as your starting point, and because of that all of the distances had to be reconsidered for the best readability. It should be rather intuitive, and it is better described in the legend page. These changes also allow for the page to be a lot more readable, and of course planning your day just got a lot easier.
• Better accommodation sorting. Accommodation in a city is now better sorted, with albergues grouped by type at the top and with private accommodation options grouped by type below. No more funny business where albergues were scattered randomly throughout the list.
• Better comment sorting. In the past comments didn’t always sort by date. In the now they do.
• Better visualization for exactly how far away from the camino some of those alternate routes take you.
• A bug which caused to guide to crash if there was a comment which was empty has been fumigated.
• Most users will now see the correct decimal separator for distances, with periods and commas appearing where they ought to.
• Generally better typography. Some missing characters were fixed, sizes were adjusted, that kind of thing.
Stay safe, and I hope to see you all later this year.
Happy days fellow pilgrims.
This update fixes a small mapping bug which caused the map to fail along some stretches of the Camino.
Big code update, and some significant changes to how the maps are accessed. The map icon in the upper-right now opens the map to that location, and the compass in the upper-right zooms to your location.
The app is finally rotatable, which has been requested by a few pilgrims along the way.
This is the big 2020 update. The app will continue to get bi-monthly updates during the year but this is the biggest one, and it brings the apps up to date with the 2020 printed guidebook which was just published.
Thanks again for all of the great support!
3.0.5 Brings a few new albergues to the guide, and renames a few others that have changed owners. It also removes an alternate route that has been regularly denounced by pilgrims as being overly dangerous.
3.0.4 brings a minor bug fix for some links.
3.0.3
Much ado about maps!
1. Two more types: Apple Maps and Apple Satellite view.
2. Better map markers: Not quite perfect, but getting closer. They load a bit faster now and use less memory.
3. Improved offline map downloader, now with the ability to delete offline maps to get back space.
Plus a smattering of little adjustments here and there.

Now in their 7th year, version 3.0 of the Camino Francés brings a whole new look to the app as well as a small rebranding. It has been rewritten from the ground up to be faster and easier to use.
More offline content: The Wisely + edition of the guides now also include offline mapping capabilities. This has been on the wishlist for a long time and I am happy to say that it works wonderfully. The maps are a custom style, allowing you to get a better view of the topography ahead.
New content: The app now incorporates all of the new information that was recently published in the 2nd edition of the printed book.
More comments: Leaving a comment about an albergue or hotel is now much easier, and I have added the ability to leave a comment about cities as well. Many users wanted to leave up to date recommendations for restaurants or other fine things they discovered, and so now it is possible. Note that this feature does require a data connection.
Small update. The elevation map has been replaced with the previous design which includes icons for albergues and cafés.
The Wise Pilgrim Guides have gone to press and are now available in print form. The work to get them there has been put into the app as well, and the content is now even better. It has been an adventure, if you find the app to be of quality please take a minute to rate in in the app store. I know it is a pain, but your efforts are greatly appreciated. - Michael

Content: More than a dozen new albergues.
Content: Updated content for several albergues, including a few wonky locations.

Functionality fix: Fixed an issue that made it frustrating to use the search feature for places with accented characters in their name.
Added a call-out for the current gallery exhibition at the Parador in Santiago during the month of July, visit karigale.com for more information.
