This is a compatibility update with important fixes and a bonus new feature.

This update delivers some important fixes along with greater support for Animated PNGs.

- Animated PNG frames will be preserved upon import instead of being flattened.
- There's another fix for those who crash when opening the Color Panel.
- Add text to your canvas with dictation and no crashing.
- Brushes should no longer be mysteriously overridden.
- No more crashes when you adjust the ColorDrop Threshold with Animation Assist or Page Assist enabled.

You asked (a while ago) and we've listened! Not only can you Group, you can now even Ungroup. Tap the Layer Group to find it in the Layer Options menu.
This update also brings a multitude of bug fixes.

• Importing large PDF files into the Gallery will no longer cause a crash.
• The secondary component of a Dual Brush will display at the correct size when Dynamic brush scaling is toggled off.
• Repeated crashing of the Color Panel caused by errant palettes will no longer interrupt your flow.
• Merging down on a Clipping Mask when Animation Assist is active won’t close the app.
• The Remove function in Selections is now removing instead of adding.
• Things will continue to run smoothly if layers are dragged from a large canvas into another artwork.

Say hello to the exciting new features for Apple Pencil Pro in Procreate.

Apple Pencil Pro with Procreate unlocks new ways to customize your favorite brushes, introducing new possibilities for your workflow. This update releases support for barrel roll, squeeze and haptic feedback.

Brush Settings for barrel roll
Barrel roll supercharges Procreate brushes in Brush Studio, providing a new way to control shape rotation, stroke jitter, color dynamics, grain rotation, size, opacity and more. You can add barrel roll to many other settings in the Apple Pencil tab, or by tapping the numeric entry button on the slider and switching on barrel roll.

Squeeze
Hover over your canvas and squeeze to select the layer you wish to work on, speeding up navigation on even the most complex projects. Squeeze to pick colors with Eyedropper or use QuickMenu to activate shortcuts without ever touching the screen. Assign squeeze to custom actions with Actions → Prefs → Gesture controls.

Haptic feedback
Haptic feedback provides a more tactile experience when making selection masks, transforming layers, using ColorDrop, drawing QuickShapes and more. Try turning on Snapping on the Transform toolbar to feel the layer snap to the canvas edges.

Liquify Twirl with barrel roll
You now have full control over rotation in Liquify Twirl. Twist the Apple Pencil Pro back and forth to bend your layers exactly how you want them.

If you want to keep drawing on your layer without Drawing Assist, tap the assisted layer twice and tap Drawing Assist from the Layers Options menu to turn it off.

Apple Pencil hover has just gotten even better and this update now lets you preview Tilt and Azimuth. Procreate is giving you one more reason to smile. You can now add Text with the Smiley Sans font in both simplified Chinese and Roman characters.

We've fixed up a few issues that were causing some of you trouble:

- Certain Gesture Controls were interfering with Selections and Adjustments. Now you are able to use Selections with your Apple Pencil again and make changes to your Adjustments amounts, regardless of setting.
- Printing from your app directly is possible again.

Did you know that tapping in Freehand Selection results in straight lines when selecting? Give it a tap next time you use it!

Starting the new year off with some improvements so you can draw without interruptions, print your work successfully and snap your QuickShape more accurately. We have also added a tweak to make improved ColorDrop feel even faster. This update also fixes crashes related to Text, Groups, and Layers.

Although the Perspective Guide heading has (until now) always said "Tap to create a vanishing point", did you know you can add up to three points?

This update fixes some important issues including an intermittent crash using QuickMenu.

- Fixed corruption after performing undo/redo actions in Liquify
- Pinch-zoom gestures work correctly while in Liquify and Transform
- Incorrect square Brush Cursor previews no longer appear on custom brushes
- Keyboard nudge shortcut function correctly
- Tilted flicked strokes on M2 devices behave correctly
- Two finger tap Opacity options no longer incorrectly includes Pencil
- Palm Support level for Procreate section in Settings app has been removed
- WEBP files can now be imported

This update unlocks a whole new way to interact with Apple Pencil hover on the new iPad Pro. Experience a range of new hover features like Brush Cursor, ColorDrop, Gallery Previews, Selections, Brush Size and Opacity Gestures, and more. There’s also lots of improvements to stability and an updated look and feel for notifications.

• Brush Cursor
Before you even begin your stroke - see a full color preview of your selected brush when painting, and a preview of what will be removed when erasing. Erasing often involves lots of trial and error. For the first time, you can actually see what you’re about to erase. The brush cursor outline options have been enhanced, blending beautifully with your art. Brush cursor settings can be personalised globally in the Prefs menu, and on a per brush basis in Brush Studio.

• ColorDrop
It’s never been faster to fill. Hover above your Active Color and double tap on your Apple Pencil. Tap separate areas of your artwork to continue filling with your chosen color - as many times as you like. This can also be enjoyed without hover, by selecting “Continue filling” after performing a ColorDrop, or holding the Modify button on the Size and Opacity toolbar.

• Gallery Preview
Procreate springs to life as soon as you enter your Gallery. Hover over the artworks in the gallery to watch them play their animations, 3D animated previews, or Time-lapse.

• Brush Size and Opacity
Hover over your artwork and adjust the size and opacity of your brush with intuitive gestures. Pinch zoom to adjust size and slide up and down to adjust opacity. These gestures can be activated in the Hover tab in Gesture Controls. You can even choose in Prefs to hide the Size & Opacity sliders completely, so you can really focus on your artwork.

• Freehand Selections
You’ll also be more accurate building Freehand Selections. Tap to create a start point and hover to see a preview of where the line will draw if you tap again.

• File Compression Improvements
It's up to 3.5 times faster to perform actions such as painting and undoing thanks to updates to file compression and other performance improvements. Files exported from Procreate in versions 5.3 and higher will not be able to be opened by older versions of Procreate and Procreate Pocket. Files created in older versions of Procreate and Procreate Pocket will automatically update.

• Third-Party Stylus Deprecation
Apple Pencil just keeps getting better and other stylus providers have critically scaled back their production and maintenance. As we’re unable to provide a quality experience for these devices we’ll be removing support in this update. Logitech Crayon support will continue.

This update provides some much anticipated quality of life bug fixes for Large Canvas lagging and the corruption of Canvases in Stacks after attempted deletion. It also includes some other fixes included below:

* iPad Air 5 compatibility.
* Now when holding the Transform icon you'll be able to pinch outside of your selection to resize it, and pinch inside the selection to resize the Canvas.
* Keyboard Shortcuts are now able to be used when in Edit Text mode.
* Increased maximum dimensions of imported HEVC and MP4s.
* Large Canvases will no longer experience lagging after performing undos.
* Hexadecimal input will display correctly when using iOS's Larger Text accessibility setting.
* Canvases will not longer corrupt within Stacks when attempting to Delete following Duplication or adding a new Canvas to the Stack.
* Layer Select will now select the Layer correctly if you hover, rather than tap.
* Importing an image via the Photo button in the Gallery will no longer reduce the image dimensions upon import.
* Corrected notifications for SwatchDrop and Copy Layer.
* Procreate will not crash after moving or rearranging a Group of Layers within itself in the Layer Menu.
* Larger text will no longer cause the Paint and Transform icons to overlap on 12.9" devices.
* Exporting as a PNG with Page Assist on will now retain the background color.

We're stopping by to give you an update to stop corrupted thumbnails from appearing, improve 3D and drop some other little bug fixes outlined below:

• Your brush won't be replaced by a different default Brush after long holding the Paint/Smudge/Erase buttons.
• Brush Strokes won't be wobbly when painting slowly using a finger.
• Allow Material Maps to be imported in an existing document via Drag and Drop in the Layers panel.
• You can now use an Apple Pencil to scrub through your Time-lapse replay.
• Improved seams in 3D painting.
• Eyedropper now works in 3D Reference.
• Fix for freezing when toggling Page Assist off and then immediately entering another artwork
• Your Layer won't be empty when you Copy and Paste Text using Selection.
• Fixes for mesh thumbnails not updating when layer contents change or when changes are made in Lighting Studio.
• Opacity filter improvements for 3D.

This update fixes a freeze when opening the Layers panel when generating a tiny Layer thumbnail. 

It also includes some important fixes for 3D, including consistent stroke resolution when painting, Paint through mesh, and support for Layer Select.

• Paint Through Mesh in 3D Actions will allow painting through any obstructing inactive meshes.
• Reduced delay in loading the Palettes interface, Brush Library, and when opening a Canvas, especially on 2GB devices.
• Increased maximum Layer count in 3D (mostly affects 4K models).
• In Animation and Page Assist, when you create a Group it will no longer automatically behave as a "Blend Primary Frame".
• Added support for ABR import from Photoshop v.23.
• Fixed visual errors in uniform blending and intense blending brushes in 3D.
• Improvements to Multi-stroke undo.
• Eyedropper now selects the correct color for Material Maps.
• Layer Select won't incorrectly display hidden layers from within Groups.

In this update you can now add a background to Page Assist, which is great for lined or textured paper sketchbooks. You can also tap 3D materials for helpful actions like Fill and Clear. There's also some fixes for you.

- Thumbnails should no longer show corrupted when you fast scroll in a full Gallery.
- Your favorite Brushes won't override when using QuickMenu.
- Hidden layers won't show in Layer Select.
- You can now easily Apply your change in Gradient Maps.
- Drawing with your finger with Dynamic Brush Scaling off won't cause strange shapes at the beginning of your stroke.
- Undo/Redo is a little more discreet with the removal of the progress bar.
- No more crashes when merging Text layers.

Introducing Procreate 5.2 featuring all new Stroke Stabilization, 3D Model Painting, Page Assist, and breakthrough accessibility tools. This update contains some urgent fixes including scaling quality in Transform, as well as fixing up laggy brush strokes.

Other fixes:
- Increased Layer limits for the iPad Pro 2018 12.9", and the 11" 1st Gen iPad Pro.
- Eyedropper now displays your Canvas with the correct Color Profile.
- Layer Select will now stop showing you those pesky Groups.
- Fix for glitching when Warping a Layer under a Clipping Mask.

• iPadOS 15 memory updates
iPad Pros with 6GB of RAM or more can now take advantage of the extra memory and create even more layers and even bigger resolutions. Compatible iPads can now create canvas sizes up to 16k by 8k, and make hundreds more layers for animation.

• Stroke Stabilization
Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. Combine standard Stabilization with Procreate’s new Motion Filtering for ultra smooth and stable stroke creation. Set stabilization app-wide, or apply to individual brushes in Brush Studio.

• Recent Brushes
All of your most recently used brushes are now just a tap away. Recent Brushes automatically populates with your last used brushes, plus you can pin your favorites so they’re always available.

• Brush Size Memory
Save your exact brush size and opacity with just a single tap. Creatives, tattoo artists and inkers can now keep every line beautifully even and consistent as you save up to four size or opacity memories within any brush across paint, smudge and erase.

• 3D Model Painting
Paint gorgeously detailed 3D models for game assets, industrial design, or just to learn something new. Paint directly on OBJ and USD models with all your favorite brushes, QuickShape, image filters, and more.

• Material brushes
Paint beautiful textures with Color, Metallics and Roughness all at once with Material brushes. Isolate individual materials and apply effects and adjustments, transform, smudge, paint or erase. Any normal and ambient occlusion materials from your model will also be respected.

• Page Assist
Ideal for creating storyboards, comics, books or use it as a sketchbook. Keep your focus on a single page or quickly flick through to where you need to be. Import PDFs directly into Page Assist. Get down to business and Procreate. Ha Ha Business!

• Lighting Studio
Use up to four customizable full color light sources to create that perfect atmosphere. Then place your object into any of the 11 natural and artificial lighting environments, ranging from Nightlife to Daytime and anywhere in-between.

• View in AR
Bring your 3D painting into the real world using AR. Perfect for client presentations, or confusing children.

• 3D Animated Export
Share your 3D creations quickly and easily in an animated video. Bring them to life by displaying every angle using full rotations with Spin. But maybe you don’t like to go all the way? We have something for you swingers too.

• Improved Adjustments
It’s really great to Pencil in filters using any brush! What wasn’t great was having to choose between Layer and Pencil every single time you wanted to apply an Adjustment. Layer and Pencil options are now always available to switch between; you can apply an effect to the entire layer, then retouch with Apple Pencil at any time.

• New Color Cards
Get yourself some hardware store chic with the new larger palette swatches. Colors are automatically named by shade and color, or customize the name at any time. You’ll never struggle to find Disruptive Beige again. You can smell the sausages from here.

• Larger Text
None of us are getting any younger and its reassuring to know you can now increase the size of Procreate’s text. Sliders, thumbnails and buttons will also get swol making Procreate more usable for more artists.

• Single Touch Gestures
Use a single touch to move, zoom and rotate your canvas, or fit to canvas without needing to pinch.

- You can now change color profiles after you have created your Canvas.

Procreate on your face! See your FacePaint update live and even play your animations. It’s not only for your fans, share your photos and videos with everybody.

• Palette Capture & SwatchDrop
Capture the colors around you with your camera or photos in your library. Fill your artwork with color by dropping swatches right onto your canvas. You can also import Adobe® ACO and ASE palette files. Why tho.
