GenAI Chatbots: August 2026 Apptopia Data Brief, Global Downloads Growth Goes Negative

Meta AI had the largest percentage points jump out of any app this month, increasing its share of US DAUs from 15% in June to 18% in July. The rest of the apps in the market are flat or down month-over-month. Even with Meta AI’s 2 million US DAUs, its Average Time Spent per DAU is the lowest of the bunch, by a significant margin.

Our US consumer device panel shows Meta AI users are spending about 9.5 minutes in the app each day whereas people spend about 22 minutes in ChatGPT. Take a look at last month’s article to see how many GenAI chatbot apps Americans use.

Global downloads of the most popular GenAI chatbot apps have hit a negative growth month for the first time. July 2026 was down ~2% over July 2025. Just looking at the US, about 43% of mobile phone users still have never used a GenAI chatbot app. Globally this number is likely larger.

Moonshot AI released Kimi K3 on July 16. The company said K3 still trails the top proprietary models but showed frontier-level performance across their evals, and independent analyses from Arena.ai and Vals AI suggested it’s competitive with flagship frontier models. This put the app on our radar in a similar way to how DeepSeek first got on our radar.

Kimi is still small so we’re not including it in the US market above but the news did drive people to download the app. It surpassed Grok in daily downloads for one day, along with other competitors for a few more. It did not come close to Claude, Gemini, or ChatGPT but remains above daily global download levels of Microsoft, Copilot and Perplexity.
