Gen AI Chatbots: June 2026 Apptopia Data Brief, Claude Continues Reducing U.S. Daily Mobile User Gap With ChatGPT as Both Head for IPO

Claude mobile app DAUs in the US are up 1,100% YTD while ChatGPT has slipped 12%. Microsoft’s consumer Copilot app has seen the largest drop at 60%, contributing to overall daily users of the market having fallen two months in a row. Claude owns roughly 17% of the consumer mobile app market, not nearly the share it owns when it comes to enterprise.

Even with Claude’s growth, it is not stealing consumers on mobile from ChatGPT. The percentage of ChatGPT’s users who are also using Claude did rise from 1.4% in January to 3.7% in May, but the reverse relationship is also growing. Claude users who are also using ChatGPT increased from 58.3% in January to 65.8% in May. Claude does appear to be gaining interest from Grok users, with the overlapping segment rising 171% YTD (now sitting at 11.1%). Grok’s overlap with ChatGPT has been flat.

Outside of Claude, Gemini is the only app with steadily increasing DAUs each month. It’s up 13%, YTD. “What stands out is that Claude’s surge comes with real engagement, not just a vanity-metric spike, and that engagement now tops ChatGPT on a per-user basis,” said Tom Grant, VP of Research at Apptopia. “Claude’s heaviest users are spending more than two hours a day inside it, which is behavior that’s difficult for another player to steal or win back.”

GenAI Chatbot apps’ Time Spent, as a percentage of all time spent on mobile apps, is down ~8% month-over-month. This is the largest month-over-month drop over the past year. This is US data. May is still up year-over-year (105%). Apptopia’s panel says ~43% of US mobile phone users have still never used a GenAI Chatbot app.
