  • DraftKings appears to be headed for a beat on users
  • Power users are accelerating
  • Competitive dynamics are shifting in DraftKings’ direction
  • Caution on Roblox – Gen Z time spent per DAU peaked

We are getting so close to the football season! Fantasy football drafts are happening left and right – even I am playing again for the first time in years. Naturally, it is timely to check out what mobile data is saying about the major sports betting apps.

At this point in the quarter, DraftKings stands out relative to peers. According to our Mobile Performance Index for DKNG, growth has been accelerating all quarter and MUPs are now tracking above consensus:

There are a couple of data points that help reinforce this view. One is our data that tracks the behavior of power users, or “whales”. The chart below shows that this segment of users is opening the app more in August than last year, reversing the trend from June and July:

In addition, competitive dynamics appear to be turning in the favor of DraftKings. When we look at users of Fanduel, BetMGM, and ESPN BET, they all seem to be using DraftKings more since late July. While it is not a huge move, it is in contrast to the trend with other apps (i.e. users of these apps are using non-DraftKings betting apps less):

Roblox – time spent per DAU peaked

While Roblox is getting a lot of good attention – which is well-deserved – it is important to understand that there are risks too. Apptopia’s Advanced data lets you track key user segments of an app. In this case, I’m looking at users aged 17-25 and their engagement with the app. Note that the time spent per user per day on the app peaked back in late July for this segment. While time spent per DAU is still well above this same quarter last year, there is at least some risk that its most popular new games have hit their limit.

I am sure all those extra minutes being taken away from Roblox are going into fantasy football.  So from all of us at Apptopia, good luck at your draft!  Let us know if you have any questions, but please keep them to app data only.
