    The bear case for Duolingo [NASDAQ: DUOL] is built on decelerating growth, a rich multiple, elevated short interest, and the existential threat that free AI tutors could eventually perform just as well. Our panel speaks to the last one, and it has been pointing the wrong way for the bears. Devices that use AI apps most heavily are Duolingo’s fastest-growing engagement cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We\u2019ll start with the age cohort the AI-substitution worry is probably aimed at, 17-to-25-year-olds, which is also where the sharpest move in our data shows up. For 18 consecutive months, Average Time Spent per DAU in that group sat in a tight band, never breaking 8.4 minutes and mostly living between 7.0 and 8.0. In July it jumped up to 8.8 minutes, the highest reading in the study period dating back to January 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Usage Churn agrees. The 17-25 cohort had been shedding roughly a third of its monthly actives for most of the past year and a half. Churn fell to 28.0% in June and is so far at 28.2% in July. More time spent and fewer people leaving in the younger age band, in the first month of Q3, is not a bearish signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now to the AI segments, where we grouped Duolingo’s base by how heavily each person uses AI chatbot apps. High-frequency AI users spent 11.1 minutes per day in Duolingo in July, up 14.9% Y\/Y and the largest gain of any AI cohort we track. Every other segment went flat or down on time spent, with churned AI users off 29.2% and low-frequency users off 11.0%. Q2 year-over-year numbers are not as strong, but still reflect the overall theme of decreasing engagement for those who do not use AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Worth noting what this correlation may and may not be. Heavy AI chatbot users are also the kind of people who maintain streaks, chase daily goals, and commit to a habit app, which describes Duolingo’s most valuable user. The AI segment may be a proxy for that disposition rather than a driver of it. The churned-AI cohort supports this reading, down 29.2% Y\/Y in time spent, since users who quit AI should be returning to Duolingo if the two were substitutes. Instead they left both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Average time spent per DAU across all users fell 6.8% Q\/Q in Q2 2026 and 13.1% Y\/Y. The largest declines came in the older cohorts. The 36-45 group was down 18.6% Y\/Y and the 46+ group down 15.8%. Average Time Spent per DAU among Power Users, the top 10% of the users, gave back 14.5% against Q2 2025. The exception was the 17-25 cohort, which was flat Q\/Q and up 1.1% Y\/Y, and whose Q2 churn improved 2.8 points . The youngest users held their ground in a quarter when nearly everyone else lost some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Through the first 20 days of Q3, Average Time spent per DAU is up 11.2% Y\/Y in July, across all users. July is normally an up month for Duolingo but last July was only up 1.8% Y\/Y. The 17-25 age band gained 12.4% from June to July this year against 3.2% in the same stretch last year, and the 36-45 group swung from -5.6% last July to +6.6% this July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
