For the first time in eleven months, ChatGPT has increased its market share of mobile app DAUs in the United States. I would tell OpenAI to give itself a pat on the back, but this did not come from a place of growth. ChatGPT US DAUs fell 1.7% M\/M in June. If you’re a regular reader of these monthly updates, you may notice something different about the below chart. We\u2019ve included Meta AI because it\u2019s actually the fourth biggest chatbot at this point and continuing to exclude it just felt mean. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The market is still growing but its growth is decelerating for the fifth consecutive month (on pace for six). This view is global and includes a couple of additional smaller GenAI chatbot apps but I promise you it is indicative of the US market we viewed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How many GenAI Chatbot apps do Americans use?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Q2 2026, 86% of users only really used one AI chatbot app, 11% used two, and 3% used three or more. We looked at users actually using multiple apps, not just trying one once or twice. It makes sense to me that this is the case. The LLMs are very similar and when one product gets better or creates a new feature, a competitor catches up quickly. Most people do not require specialization for one chatbot task vs. another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might remember the below image from a post earlier this year which shows a bigger spread of multi-app use. This data is based on using the app just once whereas the above data required the user to open an app at least five times within a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going further down the road of competitive dynamics, we wanted to understand what trialing a new GenAI app meant for the incumbent. Did the newly downloaded app take away time spent from the incumbent?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We analyzed ChatGPT users who downloaded Claude, Claude users who downloaded ChatGPT, Grok users who downloaded ChatGPT, and Grok users who downloaded Claude. We measured Average Time Spent per DAU 30 days before download and 30 days after download for both apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all cases but one, users tried the new app, continued to use it, but ended up spending even more time with the incumbent. The one situation where the incumbent was impacted negatively was ChatGPT users who downloaded Claude. They spent 13.5% less time in ChatGPT over the 30 days that followed Claude being downloaded. ChatGPT averaged 24.9 minutes and Claude averaged 26.1 minutes. Nothing crazy but it was the outlier in the group we analyzed. You can also see Claude\u2019s usage was more volatile, with users potentially leveraging Claude for more intensive projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPCX is hot, what about Grok?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not hot. US DAUs have fallen 28.2% since April 2026. Market share seen above fell from 10.6% in May to 8.7% in June. Additionally, the percentage of Grok users who are also using Claude and ChatGPT is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, of the major GenAI chatbots, Grok has the 2nd highest share of its users that are classified as \u201cHigh-Frequency\u201d users (57%). This percentage has been growing as DAUs fall, indicating that it is casual users leaving the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
