While Threads stalled after the initial launch, the app ramped users significantly in December with positive momentum continuing into 1Q24.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TikTok growth slows, down -18% YoY.&nbsp;<\/strong>For the first time in 3 years, it was not the #1 most downloaded app in all categories in the US.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Social messaging apps grow:&nbsp;<\/strong>Telegram Messenger sees the most positive growth overall in both DAUs (+59%) &nbsp;and Downloads (+19%). This year, it falls to Threads and Temu in our &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/blog\/the-most-downloaded-apps-in-the-us-in-2023\/?utm_campaign=Finance%20Newsletter%20-%20Lead%20Engine&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;_hsmi=290421454&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz--coUo6ghyIxjzo-rpnNRmKjI5hEHVxCo4B3RDvXcCun6wn8N_MG6PxAqCfAShh1N2DQjaqrPZR24HNeL1g8sQtMlsBFg&amp;utm_content=290421454&amp;utm_source=hs_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">All Categories&#8217; chart<\/a>, and falls between Threads and WhatsApp in our Social category ranking (above). What&#8217;s more notable than TikTok&#8217;s second-place rank is the YoY decline in new users (-18%) and daily active users (-3%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2023 was a strong year for Meta&#8217;s Family of Apps, which make up half the chart; however, 4Q23 engagement trends indicate Instagram and Facebook usage growth has peaked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instagram DAU in 4Q were down QoQ and +7% YoY (a deceleration)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instagram and Facebook Average Minutes per DAU in 4Q were positive YoY but decelerating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flipside, Meta has had engagement momentum with Threads and Whatsapp for Business in 4Q:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Threads doubled DAU in December<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WhatsApp for Business DAU grew +41% YoY<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top 10 Social Apps by Daily Usage in 2023 (US)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"557\" src=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/unnamed-43-1024x557.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2506\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/unnamed-43-1024x557.png 1024w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/unnamed-43-300x163.png 300w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/unnamed-43-768x418.png 768w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/unnamed-43.png 1120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Final notes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Telegram had the highest new user growth YoY (+19%), followed by WhatsApp (+5%)\u00a0\u2013 suggesting interest in alternative messenger apps in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br>While Pinterest did not rank in our chart in terms of downloads, it ranked 9th in terms of daily usage, growing 12%.
