Today, McDonald\u2019s spoke to their &#8220;Accelerating the Arches&#8221; campaign, focusing on intensifying efforts in the &#8220;3Ds&#8221; \u2013 Delivery, Digital, and Drive Thru. Domino&#8217;s is also expected to discuss digital initiatives during their investor day tomorrow. Mobile user data gives insight into the success of these strategies:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>McDonald\u2019s: churn of ~30% is far lower than direct competitors<\/strong>\u00a0in fast food, which average MAU churn of 43%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domino\u2019s: churn averaged 46% in October, down -8pts Y\/Y<\/strong>\u00a0and the lowest of the pizza group. Domino\u2019s fall in churn coincides with the launch of the new Domino\u2019s Rewards program on 9\/1\/23.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a group, coffee chains have the lowest churn at 33%, while pizza chains exhibit the highest churn at 56%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"561\" src=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-40-1024x561.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-40-1024x561.png 1024w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-40-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-40-768x421.png 768w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-40.png 1120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>McDonald\u2019s announced their latest restaurant concept, CosMc, a coffee\/specialty drinks\/snacks format that is likely to compete with industry giants such as Starbucks, Dunkin&#8217;, and Dutch Bros. This move is a continuation of McDonald&#8217;s broader digital initiative to drive customer frequency, especially among loyalty program members, and leverage their competitive advantages in the fast-food industry, including lower mobile churn rate compared to competitors in QSR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"535\" src=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-41-1024x535.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-41-1024x535.png 1024w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-41-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-41-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/apptopia.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/unnamed-41.png 1120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Apptopia data indicates a pattern of high engagement and low churn associated with mobile app users within coffee &amp; specialty drinks chains. As a result, CosMc represents an adjacent restaurant vertical opportunity in which McDonald\u2019s has a good chance to replicate their industry-leading digital unit economics (low churn). It also represents a huge opportunity to further leverage McDonald\u2019s mobile data-based understanding of their customer base to grow wallet share and retain users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dominos churn is down 8% Y\/Y, and is lower than competitors in the pizza delivery market. The decline in churn over the past two months aligns with the roll-out of Domino&#8217;s new loyalty program, suggesting a positive impact on customer engagement.
