  • Gen Z is leaving ChatGPT
  • September saw huge AI changes, from Nano Banana to Vibes
  • ChatGPT users are on Perplexity more

As this TechCrunch article noted, using Apptopia’s data you can see that DAUs of ChatGPT have flattened out, and user engagement has slowed down since mid-September. Minutes per day peaked at 28 minutes in the US on July 30. Now they are down to 20.5 minutes per day. This drop-off was most acute among Gen Z, whose time spent peaked at 31 minutes per day on July 30, but is now down to 18 minutes per day. Also notable were users over the age of 45, who have had a dramatic drop in time spent on ChatGPT since September 25:

So what happened in September? Well, a lot, especially on the photo and video editing side. The Gemini app went crazy with Nano Banana at the end of August into September, then Meta AI launched Vibes within the Meta AI app, and finally on the last day of the month, ChatGPT announced Sora 2. Here are how those DAUs stack up:

While Meta AI’s DAUs pale in comparison to the other two, that is still almost a double in the number of DAUs since the beginning of September.

So where are these ChatGPT users going? Well, here is a hint. While it is still small, the % of ChatGPT users who also use Perplexity is rising. Please reach out if you want to explore this more with the Research team!
